Community Organizer (Hybrid)

Overview 

The Coalition to Decarcerate IL is a group of loved ones of the incarcerated, currently and formerly incarcerated individuals, activists, and creatives working towards abolition and fighting for the rights and dignity of currently incarcerated individuals and their loved ones. We are looking for a community organizer to educate and mobilize people in Chicago and IL around the decade-long water crisis across IL prisons. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Work alongside the Coordinating Committee, Operations Manager, and the inside Advisory Board to develop and maintain local and state-wide networks of formerly incarcerated individuals, family members of incarcerated individuals, and allies. 

    • Deepen relationships with other grassroots organizations addressing issues related to criminal justice reform throughout the State of Illinois.

    • Consult with the Coordinating Committee in maintaining membership lists

  • Organize, mobilize and support community gatherings and direct actions around the water crisis, relevant legislative updates and other issues

    • Organize press events, including press conferences and roundtables when strategic

    • Coordinate with Operations Manager to support in person and virtual events

  • Develop education and mobilization strategies to engage the populations of Chicago around the water crisis in IL

  • Support the Coordinating Committee on outreach, interaction, and messages via social media and messenger (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram) between partnering organizations, institutions, campaigns, and individuals 

  • Attend CDI Coordinating Committee biweekly meetings

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years experience working with incarcerated people, formerly incarcerated people, and their loved ones 

  • 1-3 years experience with coalition building, facilitating community meetings.

  • Familiarity with the recent history of criminal justice legislation in Illinois.

  • Formerly incarcerated people and family members of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people are highly encouraged to apply. 

Salary and Contract 

  • Approx up to 20 hours per month at $22.50/hr 

    • Includes travel stipends 

  • 6 month contract, which we will reassess our budget and the workload and adjust/renegotiate the contract accordingly

  • This is a regular employee position (not a contracted position)

Operations Manager (Hybrid)

Overview 

The Coalition to Decarcerate IL is a group of loved ones of the incarcerated, currently and formerly incarcerated individuals, activists, and creatives working towards abolition and fighting for the rights and dignity of currently incarcerated individuals and their loved ones. We are looking for a community organizer to educate and mobilize people in Chicago and IL around the decade-long water crisis across IL prisons. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Manage and maintain administrative duties and communication for Gmail, Zoom,  and GTL. 

    • Supervise, support, and communicate with the inside Advisory Board through GTL

    • Assist with answering or forwarding regular queries on CDI Gmail to the appropriate personnel

    • Coordinate biweekly Coordinating Committee meetings

    • Keep records of activities for organizational integrity and grant reports

    • Assist with assembling electronic updates (newsletter) for constituents and partners

      • Coordinate with Community Organizer via social media needs and requests

      • Support Coordinating Committee maintaining CDI’s website

  • Track time and tasks via CDI’s Operations Calendar

  • Facilitate communication among Coordinating Committee, Community Organizer, and Social Media Manager

    • Coordinate biweekly Coordinating Committee meetings

    • Keep records of activities for organizational integrity and grant reports

  • Provide operational support for in person and virtual events

  • Regularly report on above operations to the Coordinating Committee

 

Qualifications

  • Experience managing/overseeing diverse groups of people and individuals

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Proficient with technology, specifically GSuite

  • Have a basic understanding of mass incarceration and why abolition is the solution

 

Salary and Contract 

  • Up to 10 hours a week at $22.50/hr  

  • 6 month contract, after which we will reassess our budget and the workload and adjust/renegotiate the contract accordingly

  • This is a regular employee position (not a contracted position)

Social Media Manager (Hybrid)

Overview 

The Coalition to Decarcerate IL is a group of loved ones of the incarcerated, currently and formerly incarcerated individuals, activists, and creatives working towards abolition and fighting for the rights and dignity of currently incarcerated individuals and their loved ones. We are looking for a community organizer to educate and mobilize people in Chicago and IL around the decade-long water crisis across IL prisons. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain administrative duties and communication for Instagram, Twitter, and CDI website.

    • Ensure social media is updated weekly and reflects CDI’s grassroots efforts

    • Grow followers on social media platforms

    • Create, update, and promote event pages

  • Manage the creation and distribution of external materials and communications

    • Ensure all of CDI’s external facing materials (which may include mailers, flyers, and media posts) are in line with the CDI’s brand

    • Ensure photos, videos, memes, and infographics are constantly updated and posted on social media to reflect our work

    • Create one-pagers and fact sheets reflecting organizational work

    • Collaborate to ensure traditional media outlets are engaged

    • Send out media advisories and E-blasts when requested by Coordinating Committee

    • Promote CDI’s events before, during, and after the event

  • Develop and maintain press relations

    • Draft and send press releases and media advisories when requested by Coordinating Committee

    • Manage external media and delegation of interviews

    • Prepare members for interviews and speeches

    • Build relationships with local and national media to constantly uplift and promote CDI’s work

 

Qualifications

  • 1-2 years experience in communications 

  • Experience managing/overseeing diverse groups of people and individuals

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Proficient with technology and social media, specifically GSuite, Instagram, Twitter, and Wix

  • Have a basic understanding of mass incarceration and why abolition is the solution
